Activities
Munchies
Two words: Free food. Can it get any better? Every Thursday night, Shepard’s Social Chairs lay out an array of food, either from area restaurants or straight from the Shepard kitchen, ranging from Krispy Kreme donuts to kindergarten-themed lunch bags to a Mardi Gras party with gumbo and king cake. Sheep tend to arrange their schedules around munchies, which allow them to take a break from studying to stuff their faces and chat with friends.
Firesides
One of the benefits to living in a residential college is the many different firesides given throughout the year. A fireside usually consists of a Northwestern faculty member discussing interesting topics with a small group of Sheep. However, firesides can also be hosted by student groups, who perform or speak for the group. Some of this year’s firesides covered Greek life, salsa dance, and musical hypnotherapy. Because Shepard is a multithematic residential college, firesides run a gamut of topics, leaving Sheep free to learn what interests them.
Philanthropy
Philanthropy is an important part of all things Northwestern, Shepard included. Shep’s Philanthropy Chair consistently sends out notices over our listserv updating Sheep about volunteer projects. Also, Sheep have an advantage for doing good: Not only can they serve the community, but also they can get housing points for philanthropy.
One activity close to Shepard’s heart is Dance Marathon, where over 500 Northwestern students raise money throughout the year for charity, then dance for 30 hours straight at the end. In 2007, NU raised over $700,000 to support epilepsy research and the Evanston Community Foundation. Shep has two Dance Marathon chairs, who regulate fundraising and provide care packages for dancing Sheep. Even non-dancing Sheep participate; this year a huge group of students decorated the dorm to congratulate the dancers, and then greeted them on the steps of Norris to carry dancers’ bags.
Formal
Every spring, the Sheep put on their fancy clothes, get
dolled up, and hit the Formal, normally at a hotel in the area. In
Spring 2007, the formal was held at the Hilton Garden Inn, just steps
away from Shepard. The theme was Havana Nights, and DJ Sims, the guy
who DJs Dance Marathon, played great music throughout the night. Because the formal is in spring it allows everyone who has bonded
throughout the year to have lots of fun.
Woo-Shep Olympics
This annual competition faces Shepard off with our
rival, Willard Residential College. Shep and the Woo-Shack battle in
events like pie-eating, dodge ball, quiz bowl, and three-legged races,
and the winner receives a trophy resembling the back half of a horse.
The Woo-Shep Olympics is a classy affair. In 2007,
Willard may have won, but Shepard is more than ready to reclaim the
trophy.
Midnight Ultimate / Midnight Running Club
Every Sunday, Sheep take a break from homework, meet in the lobby at midnight, and head over to Deering Field for a good game of Ultimate. The games continue through the winter, during rain or snow, as
Shepard residents relieve stress with a frisbee.
Under the leadership of Kate Bell, the fearless CA of the 3rd floor, Sheep come to the lobby at 12:00 midnight on Mondays and Wednesdays to prove just how hardcore Shepard really is. At the end of the night, the Shepard chant of "bloodkill" can be heard across campus from the lungs of the little running Sheep.
